OGDEN, Utah — The Ogden Mustangs are proud to announce former center Cory Love,
has signed a professional contract with the Waasa Red Ducks in Finland’s professional
league, Suomi-sarja.
Love (7-26-1990), played for the Mustangs organization when it was located in
California during the 2009-10 season. While in California, the 6-foot-1-inch, 187-pound
forward recorded 10 goals and 8 assists in 38 games.
“Cory was a great kid and a great asset,” said Ogden Mustangs owner Lori Miller. “We
are very proud of Cory. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer kid.”
Originally a Richmond, Virginia native, Love spent the 2010-11 season with the South
Jersey Raptors in the International Junior Hockey League. In 39 games with the Raptors,
Love amassed 20 goals and 29 assists as well as 66 penalty minutes, finishing second on
the team in total points.
“Our team is around to develop talent and advance players. So, as an owner, you are
always proud to see your players advance to the next level” Miller said. “To see them
succeed is great. Cory has really developed into a great player.”
Suomi-sarja is considered the third professional league in Finland and often acts as a
feeder system for the first and second leagues, SM-Liga and Mestis. Although the league
is dominated by Finish born players, there are a handful of international players as well.
Including Love, there are just 8 American born players on active rosters in Suomi-sarja.
In 5 games with the Red Ducks this season, Love has 1 assist and 2 penalty minutes.
“We wish Cory the best of luck.” said Miller “He really has earned this opportunity.”
